KUCHING, NOV 30— Sarawak will get 42 new schools next year at a cost of RM1.3 billion, said Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

In addition, he said the ministry now had a budget of RM86 million to do immediate repairs to about 300 schools in the state that were in need of very urgent repairs and maintenance.

He disclosed this to the media after the official opening of the new buildings of the SK Matu Baru in Kampung Bintawa Hilir here today which cost RM19.9million.

The Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar represented Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem in declaring them open.

Mahdzir had been asked to comment on the 2014 Auditor General’s Report which said 124 schools in the state were in deplorable conditions.

“We have the names of those schools where either the classrooms, teachers’ quarters or toilets are in critical condition. We will repair them now,” he said.

He said all repair and maintenance works would be done in phases and his ministry had already requested for a budget of RM95 million plus another RM85 million to do so.

Meanwhile, according to the state Education Department, as of Dec 31, 2014 (as quoted in the AG’s Report), a total of 388 out of the 1,452 schools in the state had been categorised as in very bad condition, 327 with minor and 464 moderate damages.

From 2012 to Dec 31, 2014, it had allocated a sum of RM202.52 million for maintenance and repairs.

The department had estimated it needed RM632.06 million to repair and maintain schools from 2015 to 2018. — Bernama
