“School leavers must meet the minimum requirement because we want quality teachers.

“The Education Ministry wants to develop holistic teachers. That’s why we have to upscale and upgrade the teaching profession.

“It is part of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2015,” he said at the first session of the convocation ceremony for teachers who underwent the institute’s Teaching Graduate Programme.

Kamalanathan said the ministry needed 380 trained teachers for Tamil schools.

He said about 250 teaching posts had been filled while 80 were still vacant, adding that the posts not taken up include teachers for art, music and physical education.

Kamalanathan said initiatives were being taken to attract more school leavers to join the teaching profession, adding that he had personally reached out to almost 15,000 SPM, STPM and Form Four students.
